Coast Guard upgrade goes slow

PASCAGOULA, Miss. - Nearly a decade into the 25-year, $24.2 billion overhaul intended to add or upgrade more than 250 vessels to the Coast Guard’s aging fleet, it has two new ships to show after spending more than $7 billion.
Now it faces an uphill battle persuading a budget-conscious Congress to keep pouring money into a project plagued by management and cost problems.
“Congress wants to work with the Coast Guard to meet their needs for its myriad missions but will not simply supply a blank check,’’ said Representative Frank LoBiondo, a New Jersey Republican who is chairman of the

UND NICKNAME CONTROVERSY: Hockey to be hurt the most

One of the sanctions the NCAA plans to levy on the University of North Dakota for keeping its Fighting Sioux nickname and logo is removing the possibility of home NCAA tournament games.
For many sports, that will never come in to play, as their national tournaments and events are played at neutral sites.
But in women’s hockey, the top four teams nationally get to host an NCAA quarterfinal game, and the emerging UND program is inching toward being one of those teams.
So, come next season, the women’s hockey team could be the first UND sport to be affected by

Run on QBs could mean as many as six go in first round

a_dalton_042211_top.jpg

The buzz around the league continues to be that up to six quarterbacks could go in the first round of next week's NFL draft. And a lot of people shake their heads in amazement soon after acknowledging that.
"It's nuts, but I don't disagree with that," one scout said. "There's a lot of good players at other positions that are gonna fall as a result of people over-drafting quarterbacks. I'm telling you, teams that have that (quarterback) position filled are salivating."
The principle here: The power of one. As in, it only takes one team to like a player and

Hockey India has received a proposal for a six-match bilateral Test series from the Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF), which it will forward to the government for approval soon. We received a proposal from them recently and will be sending it to the government for approval. We will work out the modalities after getting the clearance,” HI secretary-general Narinder Batra told HT over phone.
If the government approves, Batra said, the series could be held either

NBA Playoffs: Portland Trail Blazers battle the Dallas Mavericks in Game 2

portland-trailblazers.jpg&w=200&h=150&zc=1

Coming into this first-round matchup, the consensus around the league was that the Dallas Mavericks would almost certainly struggle against a talented young Portland Trail Blazers squad. Even though that did turn out to be the case in Game 1, the Mavs were able to hold off LaMarcus Aldridge and company and get the win to take the 1-0 lead in the series.Blazers
There is no question that the Dallas Mavericks are one of the best teams in the Western Conference and could be well on their way to a deep run in the playoffs, but I believe they will

Thibodeaux: NBA Finals still in reach for some former Jayhawks

jordan_barkley_1993.jpg

Some Jayhawks still have a shot for a championship this year.
Albeit, they are former Kansas players playing in the NBA, but it could be a nice consolation for losing to Virginia Commonwealth in the NCAA tournament.
Out of the 16 playoff teams in the NBA this season, six contain Jayhawks on their rosters. There are eight players in total, but only six of them play relevant minutes.
Unfortunately for KU fans, top teams such as the Bulls, Spurs and Lakers are void of any Kansas players. Only a handful of these players stands a reasonable chance of even reaching

Is Facebook an essential part of being a sports fan?

Facebook is aware of the social aspect behind playing and watching sports. ”You’re just never a fan alone,” Nick Grudin, Facebook director of media partnerships, recently said at the Sloan Sports Analytics Conference. The social network would love if the answer to the question in the headline was a resounding yes, according to ESPN:
This is why Facebook is now an essential part of being a sports fan, as Nick Grudin explained in his presentation at the Sloan Sports Analytics Conference entitled “Social Sports: Facebook and the Fan-Centric Experience.”
NBA fans are most active on Facebook, with 7.6 million fans
